A leading figure of the 1960s underground comix movement, Art Spiegelman first published Maus as a serialized insert in Raw, the avant-garde magazine he co-published with artist and designer Françoise Mouly. The artist received a special Pulitzer Prize for Maus (volumes 1 and 2) in 1992, which proved to be a galvanizing moment for the graphic novel as an art form, conferring mainstream legitimacy on the genre and doubtless encouraging legions of younger practitioners to pursue their dreams.
