The Randolph Caldecott Award was established in 1937 at the suggestion of Mr. Melcher, who was the chairman of the board of a publishing company at the time. The Caldecott medal, named in honor of the English illustrator of children's books, is given to the illustrator of the most distingushed picture book for children published in the United States during the preceding year. The book to receive the award is sellected by the American Library Association and the Association for Library Services to Children. The Caldecott medal was awarded for the first time in June 1938.
