Description

Photograph of interior of Orbis Sensualium Pictus (The Pictured World), Johann Amos Comenius, London: John Sprint, 1705. Pages are mottled cream paper with black letterpress serif type. Scan of author portrait on left and title page on right. Author portrait on the left page is a copperplate print illustration in black ink, featuring the author in a dark, 17th-century-style coat and light high collar. The illustration depicts the author’s head, shoulders, and upper torso, positioned under an arching laurel wreath. Text on the title page (right) is bordered in a thin rectangular border composed of small diamond-like shapes. The title and author information are listed in both Latin and English, with the Latin in larger, capitalized type. Beneath the English, there is a short description (also in English) of Comenius and the work, as well as a line of information about the translator Charles Hoole. Sections of varying text are divided by thin horizontal lines, and three lines of publication information. Pages backgrounded by slim view of the book’s endpapers, hardcover frame, stray packaging material. The point of a letter opener is visible at the bottom of the frame, holding the pages open.
