Title

Songs of Innocence by William Blake cover, female figure sitting with two children under a large flowering tree

Description

Photographic scan of interior of Songs of Innocence and Experience, William Blake, 1794. Scan of title page. Page is cream paper with a smaller plate printed in the middle of the page. With various type styles in brown ink and relief etching illustrations in brown ink and watercolor, the plate features an illustration of a woman sitting with two children underneath a large, flowering tree. The majority of the page depicts the twisting branches of the tree, with the title “Songs of Innocence” printed in large decorative type mirroring the design of the branches. Leaning on the letter “I” of “Innocence,” a small, troubadour-like figure plays a horn instrument. The background features a blue sky, soaring birds, and suggestions of a larger pastoral scene. In the foreground, the woman holds a book open on her lap for the two children kneeling before her. Beneath the illustration, the words “The Author & Printer W Blake” are printed in hand-cut serif type.
