Honeywell was one of the largest manufacturers of thermostats, dating back to the last years of the 19th century. Early thermostats were regulated by means of chains that ran through holes in the floor from the thermostat to the dampers in the furnace. Thermostats became electrically operated long before the familiar model pictured here was being marketed.
