Description
Engineering Research Associates (ERA) was founded in 1946 in St. Paul in an effort to continue the work of a classified war-time Navy cryptology unit. ERA was responsible for producing Minnesota's first digital computer, and became a division of Remington Rand in 1952.
Magnetic storage drums, used extensively in the 1950s and 1960s, were developed to replace punched cards and other early storage systems to provide more rapid-access computer storage.
