These hand-colored lithograph portraits are based on paintings that were on display in the "Indian Gallery" of the Department of War Offices in Washington, DC. McKenney commissioned Charles Bird King to paint the original portraits of tribal leaders when they came to Washington to sign treaties. A fire in 1865 at the Smithsonian destroyed most of the original paintings. Each portrait in the volume is accompanied by a biography of the sugject, written by McKEnney, and often based on personal interviews granted to him.
