Frederick Manfred (1912-1994) was born Feike Feikema in Doon, Iowa, and changed his name after becoming an established novelist and poet. He lived most of his life near Luverne, in southwestern Minnesota, and set all of his books in the area, which he called "Siouxland." The photo shows Manfred at work on one of his novels, all of which he wrote in longhand.
