Description

William C. Norris helped found Engineering Research Associates (ERA) in St. Paul, and in 1957 helped establish Control Data corporation (CDC). He served as President and CEO of the company until his retirement in 1986 and retained a position on the Board of Directors until 1991.

Seymour Cray received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the U of M in 1950 and a masters degree in mathematics in 1951. Cray wen to work for ERA and later moved to CDC, where he designed the 1604 Computer (shown here), a large-scale all-transistorized computer, completed in April 1959 and first used by the Navy. Cray later went on to form Cray Research, headquartered in Minneapolis.
