Lovelace was born in Mankato in 1892. She sold her first story at the age of 18, and in 1940 the first Betsy-Tacy book was published. Although Lovelace did not intend to write any other books, readers were so insistent that she eventually worte 12 other books about Betsy and her friends growing up in Deep Vally (Mankato).
