Family and Community

From Langston Hughes’s stunning ability to distill the injustices of a racist country with only a few pointed words to the portraits found within Richard Wright’s 12 Million Black Voices to Lucille Clifton’s exuberant Black B C’s, the fights for social change are shown to be powerfully felt within the confines of family and community life. Many of the works displayed here demonstrate how the most private conversations can become a spark for lives lived differently, and how even the most intimate relationships are marked by the outside world.
