"Houlton created the Minnesota Dance Theatre in 1962 with students she had taught at the University of Minnesota. It was then known as the Contemporary Dance Playhouse and School. Its home was ain a second-story studio over a dry cleaning shop in Dinkytown near the University campus.
She began the school with 12 students, but within four years had more than 400, many of whom eventually formed the nucleus of her troupe." -Mary Abbe, March 15, 1995
