F. John Lewis requested funding from the Graduate School to support his research on the use of body cooling (induced hypothermia) for open heart surgery.
F. John Lewis lead the first surgical team to perform a successful open heart surgery in a dry field under direct vision. The operation was performed on September 2, 1952 at the University of Minnesota.
