Title

Memorandum, William T. Harris, Jr. to President James Morrill regarding publicity of the controlled cross circulation method for open heart surgery

Subject

Open Heart Surgery

Description

William T. Harris, Jr. , director of the University News Service, organized a press conference at the University on April 30, 1954 to announce the development of controlled cross circulation method for open heart surgery and the success of operations on two patients. He also handled inquiries from the national news media regarding the method. Owen Wangensteen, the chief of the Department of Surgery, was concerned that overexposure in the popular media prior to having an account of the method published in a medical journal would hurt the department in the eyes of the medical community.
