1898-1902 United States Intervention

At the request of Fitzhugh Lee, US Consul at Havana, the US sent to Havana in January of 1898 the warship USS Maine to protect the lives of American citizens. On 15 February the USS Maine blew up, and the US went to war with Spain. After 14 weeks of war, the Spanish fleet was destroyed outside Santiago de Cuba Bay, and Spain sued for peace. The Treaty of Paris in December 1898 brought about the US occupation of Cuba. But the US Congress had granted war powers to President McKinley indicating that Cuba should be granted independence when the Cubans were ready for it.
