Title

Correspondence, C.J. Officer Brown of Melbourne, Australia to C. Walton Lillehei inquiring about a disposable bubble oxygenator

Subject

Open Heart Surgery

Description

Following the reports of the first successful controlled cross circulation operation in 1954, surgeons from all over the world visited the University of Minnesota to observe the procedure performed by Dr. C. Walton Lillehei and his surgical team. Dr. C.J. Office Brown of Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia visited University Hospitals in April of 1955 to observe the procedure. The "disposable bubble oxygenator" Brown inquired about in this letter is in reference to the DeWall Bubble Oxygenator that was invented by Richard DeWall in 1955. The device oxygenated blood by introducing bubbles into a reservoir. After oxygenation, the bubbles were removed as blood flowed through a helical coil and back into the patient. Use of the DeWall Bubble Oxygenator replaced the method of controlled cross circulation for open heart surgery.
