In the 1927 catalog there is an explanation about the cover image. Will’s corn varieties featured on the cover, some of “the hardiest, earliest corns in the world,” were developed from Native American seed. It recounts the story of the Mandan tribe extending hospitality towards the Lewis and Clark expedition over the harsh winter of 1804-1805, providing much-needed sustenance throughout their stay in exchange for a variety of trade goods.
