Article Clipping, "Your Own Column: Over The Back Fence," The Minnesota Daily, October 23, 1935

The article text is as follows: In the past few years it has been the policy of The Daily to include on the editorial page under the column of Campus Comment the opinions of students submitting letters on pressing campus problems. We have always given encouragement and frequently printed appeals for students to air their grievances and offer their criticisms.

Many will accuse us of bias, asserting that many of their comments never get into print. They are quite right in their claims that we do not publish all we receive. But these very students fail to realize that a fundamental policy of any newspaper is to present information of interest to a majority of the readers.

Beginning in today’s issue of The Daily the comments will appear under the column “Over the Back Fence.” We shall continue our policy of scrapping any letters that do not have a wide interest among students. We shall also continue our policy of inviting comment. It should be noted that short, spicy, punchy letters will receive first preference.
