Description
Image of an article clipping edited from a digitized version of the November 14, 1939 issue of The Minnesota Daily. The article text is as follows:
Now that the readers of The Daily have decided what the format of their newspaper is to be, we can not resist the temptation to say that our referendum was a good idea. This is evidenced both by the fact that the vote was the largest ever recorded in a campus referendum and by the fact that the voters expressed a desire for a change.
This desire for a change came as a distinct surprise to many of us, and we have learned a lesson. The gist of it is that smug complacency is a real danger to newspapers.
Prior to the referendum, The Daily staff was very nearly complacent in the belief that it was getting out the best newspaper it could. Now we know that there was and is room for improvement. In fact, in the future we will make it a policy to be more sensitive to our readers’ desires.
If, in the near future, you see new departures in The Daily, let us know what you think of them. But don’t accuse us of smug complacency. We’ve reformed!
