Dear Dr. Lillehei,
I hope it is not asking too much of you to request a
brief summary of your current ideas regarding the surgical treatment
of ventricular septal defects. Perhaps the answers summarised
under the following headings may make it easier for you.
1. Do you think it necessary to operate on ventricular septal
defects?
2. What it the likelihood of spontaneous closure?
3. What procedure, if any, do you do in the various age groups?
4. What are your criteria for operation - e.g. what flow rates, pulmonary
resistance estimations etc would influence your decision?
Your reply by airmail will be appreciated as surface mail takes
several weeks. I am presenting a paper on "Surgical Treatment of
Ventricular Septal Defect" at a Cardiac Congress in South Africa on
14/7/62 and would like very much to have your opinion before this
date.
With kind regards,
Yours sincerely,
