Dr. Russell Brock (1903-1980) was a British heart surgeon and a pioneer in cardiovascular surgery who performed one of the first extracardiac operations to alleviate pulmonary stenosis in 1948.

Dear Walton,

Thankyou very much for the reprints which arrived safely and
which I have read with a mixture of admiration and envy. I do
once more congratulate you very sincerely on the splendid work you
are doing. There are many features in your report of great
interest and value to me.

Thankyou also for your letter answering the two questions I
raised.

I am sorry to trouble you once more but I would like your advice
on one point. I am just about to order a sigma motor pump and had
planned to get the type I saw you using, namely a single central
motor with a double shaft activating a pump on each side. I still
feel that this is probably the better one to get particularly as it
enables independent control of the inflow and the outflow. However,
I note that in your article on ventricular septal defects you advise,
and actually illustrate, the type with motor and one pump with both
tubes going through the same pump. I just want to verify that you
have not found a snag in the other type. I realise, of course,
that it is slightly more complicated and has more controls. Would
you advise me to get the double pump set up?
