<p>Pamela Schmidt was the third patient to undergo open heart surgery using the technique of controlled cross circulation at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in 1954. Pamela and her parents participated in the public announcement of the technique at an April 30, 1954 press conference held at the University. Pamela's story was subsequently published in <em>Cosmopolitan</em> magazine and in other forms of the popular press.</p>
