Leonard Engel wrote, "The Operation, A minute-by-minute account of a heart operation--and the story of medicine and surgery that led up to it." The book, which profiles the surgical procedures devised by C. Walton Lillehei and others at the University of Minnesota in the 1950s, also includes a history of heart surgery. It was published in 1958 by the McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc.

Dear Dr. Lillehei:

This is just a brief note to thank you for the great
friendliness you showed me on my recent trip to Minneapolis.

I appreciate very much the fact that circumstances
must have been exceedingly difficult for you, since I had
to see you on days when you performed operations. I don't
have to be reminded that on such days even the most phleg-
matic surgeon would be under enormous tension.

I expect to be back in Minneapolis, as I mentioned
to you, on June 17th and I am arranging to stay five weeks.
This is little enough time, but if I work at it I should be
able to get much of what I need. In any event, if it should
prove necessary I will not hesitate to return to Minneapolis
subsequently. The point is that I mean to spare no effort
to make this book a thoroughly authentic account of modern
medicine generally and what you and your colleagues are
doing particularly.

I enjoyed talking with you very much and am looking
forward to seeing you again. With warm regards.
