Open Heart Surgery

From 1947-1951 Clarence Dennis, professor of surgery, received funding from the Graduate School, National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Public Health Service to support his research in the development of a heart and lung machine for open heart surgery. In 1951, Dennis left the University to become the head of the Department of Surgery at the State University of New York Medical Center at New York City, where he transferred his heart-lung machine and additional research equipment. Dennis arranged for The State University of New York to reimburse the University of Minnesota for a portion of the medical equipment that Dennis moved to New York for purposes of continuing the heart-lung machine research. A reimbursement of over $5,000 was made to the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota.

Dear Mr. Lunden:

Pursuant to the conversation which we had last Friday, I am
sending you this written request that consideration be given to the
allocation of funds expected from the State University of New York
to one of the research budgets of Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen in the
Department of Surgery.

As arrangements have been made, for which I should like once
again to express my thanks, the State University of New York will
reimburse the University of Minnesota at the rate of $ .50 on the
$1.00 for equipment associated with the project related to the dev-
elopment of a pump-oxygenator. This transfer of funds will complete
procedures for transfer of this equipment from the University of
Minnesota to the State University Medical Center at New York City.
As the understanding stood, the sum in question was to be just under
$5,000 for the equipment already available prior to our estimates
early this spring with the understanding that the same rate of re-
imbursement would take place for such equipment as might be purchased
after that time and up until the time of transfer, which will take
place about August 20th.

The justification for this request appears to me to be that both
I and the project represent a part of the Department of Surgery and
that both have developed under Dr. Wangensteen's guidance and as a
part of his department and that therefore anything I could do to help
him to pass on such stimulus and guidance to other men in his depart-
ment, I should make every effort to do.

Anything which you can do to facilitate this direction of funds
into Dr. Wangensteen's department would be very much appreciated,
indeed.
