At the request of the Chair of the Department of Surgery, Owen Wangensteen, William T. Harris, Jr. of the University News Service organized a press conference at the auditorium of the Variety Heart Club Hospital on Friday, April 30, 1954 to report the results of the first three controlled cross circulation open heart surgery operations at the University of Minnesota. C. Walton Lillehei and his surgical team described the technique to members of the print, radio, and television press, and Pamela Schmidt, a patient recovering from the operation, along with her parents, were introduced to the media.
