SCHEDULING OF HEART CASES
May 25, 1957
1. Drs. Anderson, Adams, Lillehei, Warden, Mr. Staples and Miss Gilman
met Saturday, May 25th to discuss scheduling of heart cases to meet
hospital policy for admission of patients. This was the second
discussion. The first one was without Drs. Anderson and Lillehei.
2. Questions arise about long stay of patients while waiting for surgery.
Though there are medical problems which influence scheduling for
admission and scheduling for surgery, perhaps there is a relationship
to which we would more or less expect to adhere.
3. Dr. Adams stated that though heart catheterizations were scheduled
into September, there is an occasional cancellation and no urgent
case has to wait longer than ten days.
4. All doctors present urged that social worker have immediate contact
with families on arrival of patient at hospital, to assist them
with problems that may occur, financial, blood, etc.
5. Mr. Staples suggested that patients come to clinic the day of
admission in order that family may have opportunity to talk with
doctor on arrival. Dr. Lillehei did not think this would be possible
for surgery staff because of long operating room schedules, but
thought it might be worked through pediatrics.
6. Various ways of scheduling patients for admission were suggested.
Dr. Lillehei said he had considered a more flexible method. After
considerable discussion, Dr. Lillehei said he would give a seasonal
date in his reply with a definite date to be given a month or so
before admission. He will give this more thought.
