Letter addressed to Malcolm M. Willey from William L. Nunn, November 1, 1945, Page 3
Description
Typed letter from William (W.) L. Nunn to Mr. Malcolm M. Willey, with the subject line of, "News stories which have appeared in the Minnesota Daily this school year." This is the third page of the letter and includes the following text:
"From these attached stories, which have appeared in the Daily, I think there are a few significant conclusions that can be reached:
(a) The Minnesota Daily has played up the whole veterans' situation at the University all out of proportion to its relative importance.
(b) The extent to which the Daily editorializes in its news stories is pretty obvious. Special comment may well be made. Special attention should probably be called to the feature stories: "SEEMS U AUCTIONED OFF COUPLE HOUSES", "BEFUDDLEMENT HITS VETS IN REGISTRATION", "U STANDS STILL: CHARGES VET", and "HOUSING FORCES VET TO LEAVE U" - The veracity of these stories may well be questioned; certainly their propriety can be questioned.
(c) It is especially significant and important to observe the number of individuals from the University who have been quoted in the Daily on the housing problem. These are: Mr. Middlebrook, Dean Williamson, Mrs. Croft, Dr. Morrill, and Dean Fraser. The point may well be taken that this number is too large, especially in the absence of any agreement as to a publicity policy regarding housing. Because of special attention given to significant statements on housing by Dean Williamson and Mrs. Croft, these statements are being analyzed in a separate memorandum.
(d) It should be pointed out, however, that the orderly prepared statements issued by the President on the housing situation over the latter part of the period covered, are reflected most advantageously from the University's point of view in the most recent issues of the Daily.
W. L. Nunn"
