A cartoon drawing depicting two images of buildings are positioned next to the title with quote bubbles coming from each building. The first quote bubble text is as follows: "Geez! Our Donations are way down, the Gophs tied the homecoming game, the economy is collapsing, Carter, SALT, boat people..." The second quote bubble text is as follows: "... It's the Damned Daily's Fault!" Beneath the title and cartoon images is text organized into sections with headers in large block letters: "So What's the Point?"; "Let The Students Decide!"; "Here's How To Help!" The body of the text is as follows:

Save The Daily!

Since the spring quarter humor issue, the Minnesota Daily’s future has become increasingly uncertain. Some people objecting to that single issue would like to see the end of the Daily altogether. Others, like Rep. Ken Zubay, want to stop student funding of the Daily. Zubay and some of his colleagues on the higher education division of the House Education Committee are planning a hearing to consider eliminating student fee support of our University’s student paper.

So What’s the Point?

The Daily belongs to the students. It’s the largest student-controlled paper in the nation and has won dozens of awards in its 80-year-history on campus. If the Daily loses student fee support, it might be less accountable to students. And the loss of student support could seriously affect the Daily’s strength, and as a result, its ability to train and serve students and get out the news.

The Daily is controlled by students, but some legislators want to try to pass legislation to dictate to students how their fees will be set. This is a clear violation of the state constitution, which grants the University legal autonomy to govern its own affairs. What’s worse, it’s a challenge to the rights of students to regulate their own taxation process and run their own newspaper.

Let the Students Decide!

Good or bad, the Daily belongs to the students. In years past, the Daily has been rated by students as one of the three best uses of the student services fee. Maybe that rating will change in the future, and students will decide to lessen support for the Daily. But it’s a choice for students to make.

It’s our student newspaper and our student fee… don’t let them take it away from us!

Here’s How To Help!

Sign the petition to protest the upcoming hearing and voice your support for a student-controlled Daily.

Write a letter to Rep. Ken Zubay to tell him you object to the legislature’s interference in students’ business: 326 State Office Bldg. St. Paul 55155. Or why not give him a call: 296-4340. It just takes a minute.

Attend the Hearing and let the legislators know how the students feel: Wednesday, November 14 at 4 p.m. Room 83, State Office Building.
