Description
Image of an article clipping edited from a digitized version of the November 1, 1939 issue of The Minnesota Daily. The article text is as follows:
The Minnesota Daily today begins an experiment entirely new in college journalism.
This issue of the paper is in five-column format - the first of such five such “tabloids” to be issued this week and next. At the conclusion of the second week of the experiment, readers of The Daily will be asked to express their preference in newspaper formats.
Their vote will decide whether The Daily is to be a five or eight-column newspaper.
Typography experts favoring the five-column form have called it the newspaper of tomorrow.” Principal advantages are (1) an increase in the number of pages printed and an attendant ease of departmentalization, (2) an increase in the number of important news stories for inside pages and (3) ease of handling the paper.
Major objections to the five-column form are (1) lack of space on page one for important news (2) production time and cost are slightly increased and (3) many readers feel they are getting less for their money.
During the experimental period, tabloid Dailies will be published today and Friday of this week and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of next week. The other papers will be in eight-column format.
The space devoted to news will not be reduced at any time during or after the experiment. An eight-page tabloid newspaper is the exact equivalent of a four-page standard-size newspaper.
