Mariko Tamaki's writing and Rosemary Valero-O'Connell's charming work illustrates the bittersweet story of Freddy Riley. Freddy is a highschooler in a troublesome relationship with Laura Dean, the coolest and most popular girl in school. Freddy has to decide what she wants: to stay with Laura Dean, who keeps breaking up with her, or move on and repair her relationships with her friends. Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me has been praised for being a story about LGBTQ+ characters that focuses on their development and daily lives, rather than the oppression they face for their sexuality.

Tamaki is known for her award-winning graphic novel This One Summer, illustrated by Jillian Tamaki. Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me is Valero-O'Connell's first full-length graphic work. She is a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and is known for her work with BOOM! Studios.
