Communities of color and Indigenous communities challenged the lack of inclusion in education, often by establishing academic departments. Native American women who were Dakotah and Ojibwe speakers worked as teaching specialists and brought their linguistic and cultural knowledge to the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.
