The United Service Organizations (USO) was founded in 1941 in an effort to provide entertainment and programming to service members. Despite the USO policy forbidding discrimination, the military itself was segregated. It was not uncommon, then, for separate USO centers to spring up and cater specifically to Black soldiers.
