Shyamala Rajender’s 1973 lawsuit against the University for employment discrimination, filed after she was denied tenure in the Chemistry Department, became a class action lawsuit over hiring and pay discrimination. The suit resulted in a 1980 consent decree that permanently prohibits the University from discriminating “on the basis of sex.” Despite gains, there still remains a disparity in faculty pay and hiring.
