Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times editor Harrison Salisbury graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1930. While a student, Salisbury briefly served as Managing Editor of the Daily before he was suspended for challenging a no smoking rule in the Library Building (Walter Library).
In 1983, Salisbury was interviewed by Arthur Naftalin on the KTCA-TV program Minnesota Issues, wherein he spoke about the incident and his time at the Daily. The reel-to-reel audio recording of this episode, preserved in the UMN Radio & Television Broadcasting records, was digitized in 2021.
