Ariel
The origin of an independent student press at the University of Minnesota is best described by the students who established it - the editors of Ariel, the first student publication.
Initially conceived as a monthly college paper, Ariel was overseen by a Board of Editors and was distributed to subscribers for $1 per volume of 9 issues. A paid subscriber automatically became a member of the Ariel Association and was entitled to vote on appointments to the board and changes to the constitution.
