Ariel: Special Editions

Adapting to the evolving interests and information needs of their readers was a quality at which Ariel staff were adept. Special issues were published with themes that centered around University events and activities or that appealed to specific audiences.

In 1896, a group of women students were appointed as guest editors to “take over” an entire issue, which resulted in “The Woman’s Ariel.” The following year, “The Bachelor’s Ariel,” was published by an all-male staff. The popularity of these editions - which often included more “cuts” (photographs and illustrations) and additional pages - led to their adoption as annual traditions.
