In the Spring of 1970, national fast food chain, Red Barn, Inc., planned to demolish a section of Dinkytown in order to construct a new restaurant in its place. On April 1, 1970, students, local residents, and members of the University community responded by occupying the construction site to prevent destruction of the historic neighborhood. After a month-long battle, demonstrators were arrested and cleared out on May 6, 1970, and the site was demolished.

Daily reporters and photographers were on site the morning of May 6th to capture the interaction between demonstrators and the Minneapolis police. Only a few hours later, the “Barn Bust” EXTRA edition of the Daily was printed and available on campus. This 4-page edition included personal accounts, details of the raid and additional photographs that documented the scene. This form of photojournalism was used by the staff of the Daily to go beyond the news coverage of the event, so that an accurate portrayal was captured and witnessed by readers.

The Minnesota Daily, Red Barn, Negative Strip

On August 19th, 2025, The Minnesota Daily transferred 52 boxes of material to the University of Minnesota Archives. This included photographic negatives, many of which contain Daily photographers’ work in capturing student activism on campus. An image of a Red Barn negative can be seen above.
