Staff of The Minnesota Daily marked the 100th anniversary of the newspaper in 2000 by publishing, “100 Years In the Making,” a commemorative magazine with profiles on Daily alumni and retrospective articles on key moments in the history of the newspaper.

In the publication, Editor-in-Chief Aaron Kirscht also reflected on the future of the Daily:

"The Daily must go where the University - and indeed the world - takes it… In the long term, I imagine a time when we will not deal in newsprint and ink, but rather structure and content.  We will not have 200-some drop sites - where readers pick up the printed version of the Daily - as we have today.  Instead, there will be hundreds of thousands of points of contact - direct, focused and specialized delivery of news."

The ensuing years unfolded in line with Kirscht’s prediction.

The article, “Daily ends 65 years as a tabloid but keeps local focus,” published on February 13, 2004, previewed a format change from tabloid to broadsheet. The first issue in the new size, published on February 16, 2004, included a cover sheet with a graphic that declared, "Evolution has arrived. Welcome.”

The Daily continued to evolve by implementing changes in both the physical and digital structure of the newspaper and by producing specialized content in both mediums. A reduction in the frequency of regular print issues allowed for the expansion of online content, to include social media engagement and podcast production. In print, the organization carried on the tradition established by its predecessor, Ariel, by publishing special editions tailored at specific audiences and events.

The “clippings” and publication covers below further describe and illustrate the Daily’s evolution during this era.
