After 11 years located in Pillsbury Hall, the Daily had an opportunity to gain additional space by the Spring of 1940. It was twenty two years prior, that the publisher and owner of the Minneapolis Tribune, William J. Murphy, endowed funds to support the expansion and maintenance of the School of Journalism after his death in 1918.
By the September 24, 1938 Board of Regents meeting, authorization to plan for the Journalism Building was unanimously approved with the expectation that funding be a joint effort between the Murphy Endowment Fund and the Public Works Administration (PWA). As construction began, though, additional financial assistance was necessary.
It was then that President Lotus Coffman, prior to his death, met with members of the Board in Control of Student Publications to confirm their financial support in the construction of the Journalism Building, in the event that it would be needed. President Guy Stanton Ford recalled this transaction in his January 25, 1939 correspondence to Allan J. Wash, President of the Board of Student Publications, and asked for their support.
This request was accepted by the Board of Student Publications on March 20, 1939, with an attached resolution outlining a sum of $25,000 to be used from the reserves of the Daily, the Gopher student yearbook, and Ski-U-Mah magazine in support of William J. Murphy Hall, including space for these student publications.
The Daily settled into the basement of Murphy Hall in February 1940, with an increase of office space, from 6 rooms to 12 rooms, accommodating their then growing staff.
