Editorial Clipping, "A New Policy," The Minnesota Daily, May 14, 1903
In the winter of 1902, the Daily was reconstituted as a corporation. At $3 a share, stockholders were entitled to a subscription and a vote in the annual election. A new constitution was adopted and a Board of Directors composed of 5 members from each of the former boards of the Daily and Daily News, was established.
At the next annual election, held in May 1903, stockholders voted to appoint a new managing editor, business manager, and Board of Directors, who in turn elected a new Board of Editors.
Shortly after the election, “A New Policy” was announced in an editorial in the May 14, 1903 issue. The editors asserted that “the time has now come” for the Daily to “use what influence it may have” to advocate for principles and policies “most compatible with the future welfare of the University.”
They concluded:
“A University Daily, in our opinion, has a wider and larger sphere than simply to collect and print the news as it comes to hand. It should stand for some settled principles, and it should advocate and maintain those principles in an honest and fearless manner, using its influence for the betterment and improvement of the University which it represents. And hereafter it will be the endeavour of the MinnesotaDaily to establish and maintain a policy which it deems to be for the best interest of the University of Minnesota.”
